One of the nation's newest cities, Edmundston was formed in 1998 when the neighbouring
communities were amalgamated into what is now the Greater Edmundston area. Located
in the north-west corner of the province, the city shares its borders with both
Quebec and the American state of Maine.
Edmundston is surrounded by the ancient Appalachian
Mountains, as well as the lazy Madawaska
River which flows through the city and falls into the majestic Saint
John River. The city is home to the New
Brunswick Botanical Gardens, which are spread out over an area of 17.5 acres
(7 ha) and are a haven of both peace and beauty. Within the province the gardens
serve as a centre for the study of nature, as it is home to hundreds of species of
plant and wildlife. With many restaurants, shops, and sights to see, Edmundston
is not a destination to miss while touring around New
Brunswick.
